ACADEMICS

The multidisciplinary approach at The Educational Development Center (EDC) places an emphasis on individual, student-centered learning techniques to help young people complete grade-appropriate course requirements and fulfill their highest level of academic achievement.

EQUITY VS. EQUALITY…WE THINK DIFFERENTLY

At EDC we foster an environment that provides structure and accountability but nurtures the true uniqueness, each of our student’s possess.

With an exceptional faculty and staff, onsite support services such as learning disability resource support, crisis counseling, as well as vocational support, we help students find their individual strengths and prepare them for success.

Instruction is planned to meet the diverse needs of each student by incorporating their strengths, areas of need, modalities, and sensory issues. Students’ instruction should ensure the successful completion of an appropriate academic and/or vocational course of study. Research-based and proven instructional strategies and materials are utilized to ensure that the school provides a program that clearly articulates learning outcomes for the core subjects: English, mathematics, science, and history/social science.

Graded Elementary and Middle:

This curriculum is designed to provide the grade level instruction at the elementary and middle school level to assist grade level achieving students to maintain their average or better rate of academic progress.  The academic goal is for the student to return to the regular sector of education being able to continue academic functioning at or above the chronological and grade appropriate level of performance.

Credit Earning (Secondary):

This curriculum is designed to provide instruction in credit earning courses at the secondary level to assist students in maintaining their rates of academic progress and to eventually fulfill the goal of high school graduation. Additional Information on courses offered at Educational Development Center are available upon request.

Experiential Vocational Development:

This program is designed to address the needs of primarily high school aged students that were unsuccessful in a traditional credit-earning track.  These students typically learn by a multi-sensory approach and often lack the cognitive ability to grasp materials presented in the traditional high school track.  The focus of the program is on life skills, vocational exploration and exposure to a variety of on campus and off campus work experiences.  The Educational Development Center follows the laws governing the employment of children when they are involved in any work experiences. In addition the student will work on problem solving skills, organization, self-advocacy and communication.  Most students in this track are working towards a Special Diploma.

G.E.D. Preparation:

Students enrolled in this program must be 16 years of age or older, and meet the requirements and guidelines established by the Division of Administrative Services and Adult and Continuing Education.  The GED provides a basis for conferring a high school credential on those who have not graduated from a traditional high school.  Students in this program will cover the core academic areas of language arts, social studies, science, & mathematics.  Students will be required to compose essays on a variety of topics. Recent changes in the GED program reflect more business related & adult context information texts across all subtests.  Business communications & “how to” texts are now covered under the language arts and writing areas of the GED.
