EDC’s Evidence-Based Tiered Behavior System

EDC’s Tiered Behavior System is based on the principle that academically based interventions offer positive results in addressing the behavioral concerns of emotionally and socially challenged students. The use of positive behavioral interventions allows for multiple opportunities, to increase positive learning, and the on-going acquisition of skills to help the student manage his or her life.  This will be accomplished through: the empowerment of staff and students to recognize and engage in positive interactions, the use of appropriate and individualized reward systems, non-punishing and effective learning-based consequences, and concrete tools for measuring progress and levels of achievement.

Our Evidence-Based Tiered Behavioral System extends beyond the management of behavior. This system attempts to heighten students' awareness of the positive and negative natural/logical consequential nature of their behaviors. Attempts are then made to identify the origins of the behavior and to problem-solve for more productive alternatives. The process leads to an increased sense of individual accountability and responsibility. We enforce school rules strictly and maintain high academic and behavioral expectations for students.

Students' varied stages of development are always taken into consideration. Their differing abilities to internalize information based on past experiences and the uniqueness of each individual's environment are of major importance. The GEARA Behavioral Adaptation System is incorporated in every aspect of the student's life, resulting in greater self-control and internal motivation.

 THE GOAL

To assist our students in moving toward the least restrictive environment by facilitating behavioral transformation through the use of positive behavioral interventions and teaching replacement skills along with the use of effective consequences.

 THE PROCESS

EDC’s Tiered Behavior System reinforces the importance of positive interactions and behaviors among staff and students while stressing the use of rewards, incentives, effective consequences for concerning behavior, and accurate, useful data for measuring student progress.
